Many expert decorators and interior designers believe there is a certain list of rules when it comes to decorating one’s home. Here are the official do’s and don’ts of interior remodeling.
1. Do sketch your floor plan, you want your ideas to be solid before your order any extra parts or paint in unnecessary areas.
2. Do take the time to discover your own personal style.
3. Do identify the focal point of your rooms such as a fireplace, your fish tanks, or a bed.
4. Do define a room’s style and mood on paper. Write down the color scheme, the lighting arrangement, and the like.
5. Do choose a signature piece to focus the rest of your décor decisions on. This could be thematic or tangible such as using pottery or gold.
6. Do coordinate fabrics and carpets. Your furniture should be fitting to the rest of the room, especially the floor.
7. Do purchase your large pieces first. That goes for rugs, draperies, and upholstered furniture.
8. Do mix patterns and designs. When coordinating a room think about large versus small scale, stripes, plaid, and polka dots and try to blend them together.
9. Do allow for a natural pathway throughout your rooms.
10. Do consider the specific uses and functions of each room you are decorating.
11. Do consider the use of unifying elements like the wood tone, the trim, flooring, and motifs.
12. Do use repetition when it comes to planning shapes, colors, and room filled patterns.
13. Do think about lighting and the appropriate fixtures you will need for dramatic or spot light lighting.
14. Do contrast colors and add interest, whether that be with different materials or unique accessories.
15. Do crosslink your rooms and combine various themes.
16. Do balance each room’s furnishings appropriately.
17. Do anchor spaces and arrange for proper conversational settings.
18. Do choose accessories and décor that reinforce the color and stylistic theme of each room.
19. Do use patterns and scopes of scale to create fascinating and diverse focal points.
20. Do use odd numbers when it comes to placing items such as accents or table decor.
21. Do use symmetrical arrangements in formal rooms and asymmetrical arrangements in casual settings.
22. Do use pairs of items to underscore the balance and symmetry of each corner of the room.
23. Do emphasize the desired elements of a room and play down the unattractive features.
24. Do use a variety of textures too add interest to a room.
25. Do add more details and character to an otherwise plain and boxy room.
26. Do use lines to underscore the style of your rooms. Horizontal lines elongate and widen rooms while vertical lines emphasize the height and create a more dynamic room.
27. Do reinforce the thematic styles of a room by adding details and décor.
28. Do consider the location of your home and add architectural depth when needed.
29. Do re-decorate with each season to create the element of surprise and hospitality.
30. Do purchase the best quality, longest lasting furniture you can.
